LAST week, I was privileged to join a very well-organised Liverpool Chamber of Commerce trade mission to Boston, robustly supported by the UK’s consul-general, Phil Budden.
The trip had both civic and commercial drivers, and it is fair to say it over- achieved on both counts.
While a visit to a Boston Red Sox game saw tremendous hospitality provided by the Fenway Sports Group, the owner, John W Henry, showed a true Bostonian welcome and met with nearly all participants on the mission. I

McGhee Tyson Airport will soon have full-body imaging equipment to screen passengers, a Transportation Security Administration spokesman said Tuesday.
Sometime in the next few weeks, a millimeter wave advanced imaging technology machine will be installed at the Knoxville airport, TSA spokesman Jonathan Allen said. He said a specific schedule has not been determined, but TSA will provide advance public notice
The imaging machine slated for McGhee Tyson will include new automated target recognition software that enhances passenger privacy, Allen said.

True story: my wife and I wanted to move but we weren’t sure where. In true MBA fashion, I set up a spreadsheet to compare candidate locations for a series of factor including outdoor sports, weather, smog, traffic, lifestyle, public education, crime, and so on.
So for each of about 12 possible places I input scores from 1 to 10 for each of the factors I’d identified. And when I didn’t like the original conclusion, I (without realizing it as I did it) changed the input factors until it did. We wanted to live in Eugene, Oregon.
I didn’t realize it then but I do now. I set up an objective analysis and then subconsciously messed with the inputs to generate the conclusion I wanted.

Among Phyllis Moisan’s works of flower art are a replica of a bird dog for a hunter’s funeral, and an 18-wheeler for a truck driver’s services. The owner of Flowers From The Heart on Highland Avenue in Montgomery has been in the floral business most of her adult life. She’s fashioned flowers for joyous and terrible times.
“We used Styrofoam to form the dog, and fountain grass to make hair for the dog,” she said. “We made a horseshoe for a cowboy. We also did a Teddy Bear for a baby. I don’t like baby funerals. My favorites are weddings and flowers for new babies.”
The mother of one took over the business in August 2004 when it was on Ann Street before the development of the Walmart shopping center. Full Post…

More than half of small businesses do not think much about marketing through social media sites, a new report has revealed.
An insurance agency recently polled over 300 UK small businesses and found that 12% considered social media marketing as a necessity for their business.
