Tax tips for Kansans

File ahead of time, but you don’t pay until April 15th.

Ken Rakestraw with the Department of Revenue says “If you have a refund coming you can get it within 5 to 10 days where a paper refund might take 4 weeks.”

A staff of 12 takes care of more than one million electronic tax returns for Kansas and the information must be correct.

Terry Hunt is an E-file Coordinator for the Revenue Department and he says, “Validate the routing number, make sure the bank information they enter on the tax return is accurate.”

Tax credits include fuel efficient cars, but there is a catch!

Niki Schneider with Liberty Tax Service told us, “its only up to a certain number of vehicles per year so if that quota has already been met, then the credit is no longer valid.”

The earned income tax credit has also changed, you can benefit from having three children this year, not just two.

Looking to next year, Revenue Secretary Joan Wagnon is thinking sales tax exemptions, “Should some of those sales tax exemptions be repealed? Every time we give somebody an exemption they don’t pay tax, but you do or I do.”

Last, remember you can file your taxes early without paying early. The revenue service will wait and debit your account on April 15th.
