Adrianne Eaves credits her stepfather, Garnet Turner, with preparing her for a successful career in the insurance industry. The Auburn native owns the Turner and Eaves Insurance Agency on Boyd Cooper Parkway.
Turner has been retired for several years, but Eaves carries on his attention to detail, business sense and gift for helping clients keep up-to-date on their insurance needs.
?He was a mentor and taught me everything I know,? Eaves said from her office in east Montgomery. ?He taught me the finer points of sales, the importance of developing relationships with customers and reviewing customer needs and making sure all are adequately insured. He?s been my mentor for sure.?
Eaves said Turner was in the industry for decades before she started working in his office in 1993. The Auburn University graduate became an agent in 1996 at Turner?s urging.
?I found out that I liked it, and he encouraged me to be an agent,? Eaves said of Turner, who she said worked as an agent for more than 40 years.
Now Eaves, who has more than 15 years of experience herself, is sometimes serving the third generation of families as customers of the agency. She sells auto, home, life, boat, motorcycle, identity theft and other policies, and employs three full-time and two part-time employees.
The mother of one son shares more about her work and plans:
What do you like most about the job?
I like meeting people, and I am constantly meeting new people. I like getting to know them and helping them with their insurance protection and making sure it?s what they need ? that it?s adequate protection.
What has been the biggest change in the industry since you started?
As an industry, it is much more competitive, due to the Internet ? Geico and Progressive.
What do people most often overlook in insurance?
People need to make sure they have enough liability coverage ? protecting themselves as homeowners, or, for instance, having a swimming pool. People are getting sued more and need more protection. And ID theft is more prevalent with computers. People need coverage.
What do you enjoy most?
I enjoy developing relationships with customers day-to-day. I have had some for years and families, and then their children. And also interacting with new and existing customers and helping with their needs on any given day.
What is your biggest challenge?
I have a great staff, but when I do have to hire someone, finding the right fit is a challenge. And also making sure people understand how important it is to have the right coverage.
What are your plans?
I want to continue to grow the business and maybe one day my son may want to take over. I also want to get more involved in the community.
How is your location?
I love the location. It?s convenient to everything, and we have some walk-in traffic.
How often do people need to review their coverages?
People need to review once a year. Situations change and they may not realize it ? all the different things that can happen in life.
Do you have a specialty in the field?
I concentrate more on property casualty ? house, boat and anything physical. We have a financial representative who concentrates on life and financial products.
